Salem’s Jr. Lifeguard Summer Program
American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards.
This course is designed for youths 11 years of age, or those who have completed the 5th grade through 15 years of age.
Completion of this course includes Red Cross Jr. Lifeguard Certification.
Junior Lifeguarding will introduce participants to:
a) The skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.
b) Communication and decision-making skills.
c) The basic responsibilities of a lifeguard.
d) the basic knowledge and skills required to be a lifeguard.
COURSE PREREQUISITES Before entering Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills:
a) Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
b) Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
c) Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl.
d) Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.
Red Cross Shallow Lifeguard Course at Salem
This course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Completion of this course includes Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Certification.
a) Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 100 yards continuously
b) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
c) Complete a timed event within 50 seconds by starting in the water, swim 20 yards, Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
The shallow water lifeguarding course 6 hours online, plus 20 hours in-person learning. Online hours are done on your own time. In person hours are as follows:
Friday, April 30th 4:00-8:00
Saturday, May 1st 9:00am-6:00pm with a one hour break
Sunday, May 2nd 9:00am-6:00pm with a one hour break
