Salem Swim

dsc01892For more than 35 years Salem Gymnastics has taught the joys of movement through gymnastics, martial arts, dance and more. With the addition of Salem Swim, we’re excited to teach not only an important safety skill, but also the joys of movement in the water that will last a lifetime. Our priority is to teach children to swim well, to love and respect the water. We are committed to providing swim lessons that build confidence and teach technically correct water skills in a child-centered environment. Warm water, warm air, a friendly staff, small student-teacher ratios and a proven curriculum produce comfortable students who are ready to learn and thrive!

Totally non-competitive, Salem Swim not only teaches children the life saving skill of how to swim, but correct techniques so they know how to swim well.  Professional instruction is given from parent/tot classes through the advanced stroke techniques, kick strengthening and endurance building. Perfect for both recreational swimmers and summer league athletes, Salem enables swimmers of all levels the ability to begin the next season stronger in the water than when they left it last season!

Salem Swim houses two warm water pools with state of the art filtration and sanitation systems to insure safe, clear water for our students and staff. The smaller pool (25′ x 15′) is designed specifically for our youngest students, with wide steps that allow parents easy access into the water.  The larger pool (25′ x 50′) can accommodate several classes at once for children of all abilities. The use of noodles, kickboards, mirrors, portable platforms and more mean each of our students can have an experience tailored to their needs. There are large viewing windows from the lobby to the pools, as well as exterior windows that provide both natural light and scenic views of the woods and pond. On deck showers and changing facilities are designed with families in mind.

SCHEDULES

Salem Swim offers year round, 30-minute lessons allowing you to make swimming a regular part of your child’s weekly activities. This is the best way to encourage and maintain the water safety and fitness benefits that swimming offers your child, as well as insuring they start the next swim season stronger than before!

If you don’t see a class that fits your schedule, please let us know.  Because we are a new school, we are constantly adding new classes!

img_4898APPROPRIATE FOR NON-FLOATERS THROUGH COMPETITIVE SWIMMERS

Salem Swim provides swim classes based on age and ability. With curriculum approved by the United States Swim School Association’s established guidelines, this isn’t your typical kick and splash class. Our instructors are well trained to guide children with encouragement through developmentally appropriate activities that promote safety and teach children to swim well.

DSCN0323Mike Wood, Salem Swim Director

Mike comes to Winston-Salem from Minnesota and has been involved in swimming all his life. The oldest of five kids in an aquatic family, Mike learned to swim at a young age and began swimming competitively when he was 8 years old. He swam for a private club, for his high school, and for St. Cloud State University where he was voted Most Improved his junior year and earned a B.S. in Marketing. While in college Mike taught swim lessons at Foss Swim School, one of the premier swim schools in the country. After college he worked in sales and coached both college and club swimming. Realizing that his passion was for water and kids, Mike took a job at Lifetime Fitness where he was Assistant Aquatics Director, and has now moved to Winston-Salem to pursue his aquatic career. Mike married his long time sweetheart in 2011. He likes all sports, but has a passion for swimming, basketball, adventure racing, and all things outdoors. “The reason I like teaching and coaching swimming, besides a love for the sport, is that it’s an important skill for everyone to learn. I also like watching the kids grow and get faster as they progress through the sport. Kids also brighten up your day because they are always smiling. I am also very excited to be part of the first swim school in Winston!!”
