PITTSBURGH – Pitt freshman gymnast Haley Bodenheimer was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League’s Rookie of the Year Friday night at the conference’s championship banquet, held at the Pittsburgh Westin.

Haley is so deserving of this award and we felt she was a lock after the fantastic season she’s had,” said head coach Debbie Yohman. “We are so proud of all our girls that were recognized tonight, especially our seniors that have been such a vital part of our team for the last four years. What a great night for Pitt gymnastics!”

Bodenheimer (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) became Pitt’s third EAGL Rookie of the Year in the last four years, joining teammate Alicia Talucci (2009) and Meaghan Biros (2010). Out of 11 times the rookie of the week honor was distributed, Bodenheimer collected the award an impressive five times.

As Pitt’s top all-arounder, Bodenheimer recorded a career-high 39.325 score against No. 11 Penn State on March 11. She also holds season-best scores of 9.850 on the vault, 9.825 on bars, 9.825 on beam and 9.875 on the floor.

Talucci (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was named the Pitt team MVP for her consistency all season long. The senior was named EAGL Specialist of the Week on March 13 and led the team with a vault average of 9.802 for the year. Additionally, Talucci was named as a finalist for the EAGL Outstanding Senior Gymnast, which went to North Carolina’s Morgan Evans.

Talucci was also named to the All-EAGL first team for both the vault and the beam. She is joined on the first team by sophomore Katie O’Rourke (Springfield, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) on floor, and Bodenheimer as a first teamer in the all-around.

On the All-EAGL second team, Bodenheimer was given vault and floor honors, while senior Amy Varela (Derwood, Md./Magruder) was named to the bars team. O’Rourke earned balance beam recognition, Talucci was named to the floor second team and freshman Haley Sedgewick (Lennon, Mich./Powers Catholic) took all-around honors.

Pitt will begin competition for the EAGL Championship tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House on Pitt’s campus. Tickets can be purchased at the door. For more information, contact the Panthers Ticket Office at 412-648-PITT (7488).
